elevator speech

In the proseminar class I’m taking, seasoned academic conference veterans recommend having an elevator speech ready – where you can summarize your research and professional interests in the time it takes for you to get from the lobby to your floor, or some similar such slim time interval. Here is mine, and I figured if it was succinct enough for an elevator, it probably can go on my site.

Hi! I’m Casey Yu and I’m a second year doctoral student at Florida State University. My research interest is exploring the use and impact of mobile photography in political and social movements. I would love to study how mobile photography was used to report on the Arab Spring. In my other professional life, I am a lifestyle portrait and wedding photographer, with strong focus on photojournalism, and in a former professional life, I was (and am) an ally and educator for social justice and equity.

Also, I have two kids, Matthew & Lindsey, who are goofballs and punks. True facts.

bobcats

As you may know, in my other life when I’m not behind a camera with your family… I’m behind a camera, but in front of bobcats. I am a research assistant this summer for a pretty nifty project – the Habitat Tracker. You can find out more about the program here or here. My job this summer is to provide still and video images of the different animal exhibits – starting with the bobcats. Here are a few of my favorite shots of the bobcats I’ve taken. Loving this job so far.:)
